Rounded and Backed Binding

In this two day class we’ll make a rounded and backed book.  This is a book which has a rounded spine and a groove along the shoulder of the cover.  It is the foundational structure for most bindings in leather or cloth.

Rounding and backing is done with a hammer. In this class we’ll show you how it’s been done for the past several hundred years. It’s pretty exhilarating!

We’ll discuss selection of materials, tool use, and proper techniques.  Students will start with large sheets of paper and end up with beautiful half cloth bindings.

Learning this structure is essential whether you want, in the future, to make modern or historic binding structures. This course is a good background for courses on leather bookbinding and book repair.  It will help you get more out of those, or any other class you take.

No experience required!

All tools are provided.

This is a two day class and will meet from 9 - 5 on two consecutive Saturdays.

The cost is $225, which includes all materials.
