Half Leather Class

This class is an introduction to leather binding. We’ll make two half leather bindings using goat skin.

Leather comes too thick to be used on books.  Paring leather is an essential skill, and this is the perfect way to learn.

On your first book you'll use a leather paring machine to thin the skin, and on the second book you will pare leather using a spokeshave.  Both these books will include decorated paper covers, blind tooling and a leather label.

The students should have some experience in bookbinding, and know how to sew text blocks and round and back.

The skills learned in this class will prepare you for full leather projects, including fine bindings, full calf or historic models.

The cost is $550, students will provide their own goat skin.

Students will need to bring a spokeshave and edge paring knife.  All other tools will be supplied.
